Pupae of Tomicus piniperda in Scots pine phloem. The parent (mother) gallery is with the grain of the wood as pointed out by the yellow pen. The larval galleries go out perpendicular (not seen in photo) in the phloem (which is now very brown and dried out a lot). The blue "twist-ems" show the extent of the families area on either side of the parent gallery.
